So, what is our role in all of this?

Chiropractic and Marathon Running

When it comes to running, there are some pretty common injuries that can occur, such as:

  • Shin splints – tightness or pain in the lower leg
  • Achilles tendonitis – achiness or shooting pain in the heel area
  • Stress fracture – pain in the lower leg, often confused with shin splints
  • Runners knee – pain in and around the kneecap
  • Plantar Fasciitis – tightness or pain on the bottom of the foot and/or heel area

Fortunately, chiropractic has been proven to be an effective treatment remedy for all of these conditions. For instance, one of the techniques we use for a lot of our Minneapolis chiropractic patients who run is called the Graston Technique. The Graston Technique involves taking one of six specially designed stainless steel instruments and moving it expertly to reach the injured area and relieve the issue causing the pain and discomfort.

We also offer RockTape which is a type of kinesiology tape that a number of runners use to help prevent or relieve common running injuries. It contains no latex so it is safe for people with allergies, and it also helps boost performance, so if you’re looking for a little edge, RockTape may help!

Once an evaluation is completed, sports chiropractors will create a treatment plan taking into account the needs of each specific patient to decide between a variety of techniques, each designed to help the body to heal and to help the athlete prevent further running injuries. 

Some types of chiropractic treatment for running injuries 

Active Release Technique (ART) is a combination of massage and stretching where trained therapists apply deep tension while they move a joint through a range of motion. ART is used primarily for adhesions deep in the muscle.

Active Release Technique can be beneficial – especially for iliotibial band and hip injuries – is that it combines different muscle work that breaks down scar tissue while also emphasizing correct flexibility. Through Active Release you can actually "elongate (stretch)  some of the muscle fibers making those muscles more pliable and therefore healthier.

Graston Technique is a therapy best used for surface level scar tissue that uses handheld stainless steel tools to break down scar tissue-releasing adhesions.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) stimulates surface muscles to contract releasing tension as a complement to other techniques.

Staying healthy is a constant concern for professional athletes who get constant care from stretching to active release to heat or ice. Most adults or mature athletes, on the other hand, do not make the time every day to use a foam roller, apply ice or heat or keep up with stretching. Runners who have overcome an injury should consider ongoing preventive care.

The plantar fascia is a band of fibers which runs from the heel bone to base of the toes. Plantar Fasciitis occurs when these tissues are irritated and become inflamed.

Ankle sprains are common - therapies that help!

Ankle Injuries can always cause a quick lifestyle change, slows you down and stops your training!  So, if you do sprain your ankle get treated quickly either at our clinic, Lyn Lake Chiropractic or seek care from your local sports doctors.

Ankle sprains are common, and they do not, and should not prevent you from returning to your sport or recreational activity. Mild and moderate sprains can be treated very successfully by a chiropractor. Lyn Lake Chiropractic has great results with treating mild and moderate sprains. Any severe sprains, where there is absolute loss of any movement, should be referred to the orthopedist. Some sprains can also have underlying fractures, so it is imperative that a doctor of chiropractic, or any other specialist evaluate your ankle as soon as possible.

After a thorough evaluation, treatment could consist of any number of therapies. I find adjusting the ankle to be quite effective at helping to restore nomal function to an injured and dysfunctional area. When an injury occurs to a joint, the muscles surrounding the joint will splint and alter the motion of the joint. I have found that restoring the motion of the joints through joint manipulation, profoundly speeds up the healing time.

After getting the ankle joints and surrounding joints to a state where they are working better, Lyn Lake Chiropractic typically use our GameReady Ice Compression machine, along with Ultrasound, Laser and ROCKTAPE or Kinesio Tape to help with drainage of the inflammatory products.

How does it work?
When applied properly, ROCKTAPE lifts the skin away from the muscle, which promotes blood flow. Faster blood flow means more oxygen and more lymph drainage, which helps remove Lactic Acid.

Will it work under compression shorts?
When worn under compression shorts, ROCKTAPE’s lifting mechanism is unavailable. But as soon as the shorts are removed, the tape can begin to lift and help promote recovery.

How long will it last?
ROCKTAPE can be worn 2-3 days. It is 100% organic cotton and can be worn while swimming or in the shower.

Other treatments in the early and late stages of the sprain include:

* Protect with athletic tape, removable air cast, loose lace up support
* Rest – possible use of crutches, but wean ASAP
* Ice – 20 min on, 1 hour intervals to control inflammation, this is most important for the first 24 hours
* Compression – elastic wrap or sleeve
* Elevate – helps control swelling
* Pain free active range of motion (can use slushy bucket), tilt your ankle up and down and side to side, the movement will help control  
  swelling, will help prevent muscle splinting, and will help get blood to the area .
* Cold Laser – Speeds up Mitochondrial ATP production which speeds up the healing process.
* Pulsed ultra sound indirect in cold water
* Electrotherapy – EMS/TENS helps with pain control and will also indirectly decrease muscle splinting
* Kinesio Tape or ROCKTAPE – help with inflammatory fluid drainage, will also help restore normal muscle tension, restore appropriate nervous
  system feedback to help improve proprioception (that is how your body knows where it is in space)
* Osseous Manipulation – Get adjusted! It is a very safe procedure, and it feels great – give it a shot! This will dramatically affect alignment of your joints, help allow correct muscle tension on the joints, and wil help restore normal muscle receptor feedback ( golgi tendons and muscle spindles ) to your brain.
* Anti – inflam nutrition – Vitamin C,  EPA/DHA and Bromalain use as directed.
* Alternate heat and ice after the first two days of injury
* Isometric exercises – contract the different muscle of the foot without moving your foot
* Continue weight bearing walking
* Running in swimming pool
* Ice after exercise
* Toe raises – flat ground – progress to step
* Balance drills – wobble board, rocker board, balance sandals.

So, there is a ton of therapies that can be done to fix your once new ankle. This information is no substitute for a visit to the doctor. We have all heard of the runners' high.  But is it real?

Many people have described running as a mood-altering drug.  Some people say that running helps clear the mind.  Others insist that running reduces stress.  There is little scientific evidence to explain these findings that runners commonly experience.

An article in the New York Times describes the work of German neuroscientists (lead by Henning Boecker, University of Bonn) studying the runners' high.  The 2008 research shows a relationship between physical exercise and natural opioid (endorphin) activity in the brain.  The researchers used PET scans, which identifed activity in the brain in locations associated with the sense of euphoria and changes in mood.  According to the authors, it is the first time researchers have been able to support the "opioid theory" of the runners' high.
