Fun Running Facts!
September 21, 2011

Since the Medtronics Twin Cities Marathon is only 11 days away, and with the expo starting in 9 days.  We thought some fun trivia information would be cool to post!  We've found these postings throughout the website!  Enjoy!

Why do I get side stitches?
That pain that rips through your midsection, usually on the right side? Chalk it up to the act of breathing. Or, more accurately, to your diaphragm, the muscle that controls your breathing motion. "It attaches to the liver on the right side," says Dr. Wyrick. "When you run, the attaching ligaments stretch, which stresses the diaphragm and causes pain."

Running Rx Slow down or walk so you can take deep, full breaths. Grabbing your right side and squeezing it to support the liver may also end the pain. Another option: When your left foot hits the ground, exhale, which causes your diaphragm to rise; [more...]

September 13, 2011

We have all heard of the runners' high.  But is it real?

Many people have described running as a mood-altering drug.  Some people say that running helps clear the mind.  Others insist that running reduces stress.  There is little scientific evidence to explain these findings that runners commonly experience.

An article in the New York Times describes the work of German neuroscientists (lead by Henning Boecker, University of Bonn) studying the runners' high.  The 2008 research shows a relationship between physical exercise and natural opioid (endorphin) activity in the brain.  The researchers used PET scans, which identifed activity in the brain in locations associated with the sense of euphoria and changes in mood.  According to the authors, it is the first time researchers have been able to support the "opioid theory" of the runners' high.

Researchers are now studying to see if runners have an increased pain tolerance due to this endorphin [more...]

Back pain treatments

What helped our readers by Consumers Reports

Last reviewed: July 2011

Chiropractic outperformed all other back-pain treatments, and prescription medication rated about the same as deep-tissue massage, yoga, or Pilates. Over-the-counter medication was less helpful than hands-on therapies but performed about the same as progressive relaxation and meditation. (See the results for neck pain.)

What the research says!

Most back pain clears up on its own within a month or two. Staying active may curb pain and speed recovery. Acupuncture, chiropractic, and yoga are possibly effective for low-back pain. There might be some benefit to acupressure or meditation, but research is preliminary. A recent expert assessment found that spinal manipulation, exercise, standard medical care, and physical therapy appear to be equally helpful for low-back pain.

Vigorous exercise burns calories 14 hours after
September 2, 2011

Here's a fun research article I thought would be worth blogging about.  Any questions or comments please call or email Lyn Lake Chiropractic!

People who exercise vigorously get a bonus for their hard work: They continue to burn extra calories long after they're finished working out, a new study shows.

Researchers found that men who biked intensely on a stationary bike for 45 minutes burned an extra 190 calories over the 14 hours following their workout. This is in addition to the calories they used during the exercise.

"This is the best evidence we have that a lot of calories are burned after intense exercise," says the study's lead author David Nieman, an exercise researcher with Appalachian State University in Kannapolis, N.C.

The findings may also apply to other high-intensity, sweat-producing activities such as running ( running injuries ), jogging and playing intense games of basketball and [more...]
